I wonder why so many atheists in modern "enlightenment" countries are obsessed with God when hardly anything truly religious is pushed down their throats. I mean, I can understand why an atheist in an Islamic country might hate Allah, but there in London, or in Paris or for that matter even here in Rome (where I grew up with a view of St. Peter's "cupolone"), I never felt any sort of real religious oppression.
Could it be that Hitchens was actually very religious, but in some sort of warped way?
Pretty sure he has. He had his share of sins, from drinking to arrogance, but he was upright and meant well, and he never indulged in popular or cowardly passions. I bet that when he found himself popular, he was surprised.
I wonder why?
