An unpleasant duty

A person who was on my friends list made me the offensive "gift" of an "I stand with Planned Parenthood" tag. The only occasion I would stand with Planned Parenthood would be if I were a cop and I had the pleasure to take the members of that murderous organization to jail. I defriended the person concerned.

I agree entirely. I did hear that the state of Arizona voted do defund it in Arizona. That was good news.

It's not that I don't want to have anything to do with supporters of abortion. A couple of people on my f-list (stand up and take a bow, sabethea) have defended their views, unsuccessfully in my view, but with decency and an underlying courage which I respect; and at the very least, it is always wholesome to hear things you disagree with, if only to become conscious of what you disagree with. What annoyed me was the implicit assumption of superiority. I make you understand that I disagree with you - you send me an insulting "gift", instead of either starting a proper argument or else accepting that there is someone out there who disagrees with you. And the person in question went on to prove that my instinctive reaction was wholly right, by calling me a troll, a sexist pig, etc etc. The assumption being that nobody has a right to disagree on this matter and that anyone who does is a diseased villain.

The problem is that where abortion is concerned, Britain (this person is British) has long been a one-party state. The average Briton hears nothing but horror stories about the supposed American fanatics panting to go out and murder abortionists, and is so ignorant that as often as not is surprised to hear that the Catholic Church condemns it. I blame Margaret Thatcher, who was as much of an abortion fanatic as Obama and who corrupted her own party on the issue. With no home among so-called conservatives, the resolute opponents of abortion have become marginalized.

I agree also. Men of the future will look back in awe and horror at the practice of killing children in the womb the way we look back at the blood drenched pyramids of the Aztecs, and wonder how we could have tolerated such an abomination in our midst.

BTW, you can remove vgifts if you want. "You can remove a Virtual Gift from your User Profile page by clicking the gift and selecting the Remove Gift button in the lower right-hand corner."

Thanks, that will be very useful. The person concerned is also old enough to know better, older than myself IIRC. The fact is that where abortion is concerned there is a certain tendency to become irrational.

I've always thought that a certain degree of irrationality, at least in some areas of one's thinking, is a prerequisite for supporting abortion in the first place, so the tendency you mention comes as no surprise.

To be fair, you might say that I started it. I mean that this person published a big "give your money to Planned Parenthood and reprint this on your LJs" and as it turned out the only response was mine, and mine was two capital letters - an N and an O. But that was just a statement of my views. To actually use my space to stick her views in strikes me as escalating the issue in a way that I didn't like.
