I predicted after I first watched it that Avengers, in spite of is excellence, would win no major Oscars. Go and check if you don't believe me. I am comfirmed in my view that Joss Whedon is unpopular among his colleagues.
I was going to say something cheeky about when does a superhero movie get nominated for anything other than some minor like "Best Sound Editing" or something, but then I remembered Heath Ledger was nominated and won "Best Supporting Actor" for The Dark Knight. Still I think that was a blip and the Academy was really recognizing him for being a talented young actor who died too young. I don't really think the Joker was his best work.
Still The Avengers did get a nomination for Best Visual Effects. The Dark Knight Rises got none. The Hobbit only got three, one in the same category as The Avengers.
There were lots of good films snubbed this year, I am told. (I only saw Argo.) It isn't as bad as the presidential popularity contest, but there certainly is a lot of politics connected to winning such an ugly little statue.
