He needed to get out from under the shadow of the collapse of his marriage to Nicole, and she could use the exposure - and, in fact, made full use of it to further her career in Hollywood. Ms.Cruz has shown a very shrewd eye for career moves thus far: Europe is full of pretty and moderately talented actresses who never make the leap to Hollywood that she did. It is like, do you believe for a second that Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz had serious feelings for each other? Just a career move, in both cases.
I always thought that by ending his marriage with Nicole he was jeopardising his reputation further: the matter of her being three months pregnant at the time didn't seem to bode too well for him.
