There are a few songs for which even the words "great" or "masterpiece" are inadequate; that sound as though they had always existed, in some sphere of artistic truth beyond the ordinary world, until a great artist saw them and not so much wrote them as hewed them out of the stone, pulled them out of the space, in which they existed. Springsteen's Because the Night, in my view, is one such. It is a song that someone had to compose, because what it incarnates is everlasting.
