And I am awake because of the heat. Anyone who told me that London in the last days of December would have been hotter than Rome and hotter than it had ever been at the height of summer would have got a blank stare and a dismissive "well, maybe".

I know nothing about metereology. But after this unnaturally long, unnaturally cold winter, I do have a kind of worrying feeling that something will snap back and we will suddenly have a long streak of violently high temperatures and intense humidity. I just hope I'm wrong.

I just heard that it snowed in Rome, hard enough to stop some twenty flights from Fiumicino airport. This is astonishing. Rome has the mildest climate in the whole country, and a heavy snowfall is more unlikely there than in much of Sicily. This shows what an astonishing weather event we are actually having.
