What a tragedy

fpbI sincerely apologize to all my Australian friends. Australia did not deserve to go out like that, for a penalty that was not there. I still think Italy might have managed to score in extra time, but Australia fought honourably and well, and this result is a mockery. Truly heartbreaking.
The only thing that makes me feel better is the thought of the hearty meal of own words that the loathsome commentary team from Britain's ITV channel must have made. They were so bad, their understanding of the game so poor, and their bias against Italy so evident, that I watched most of the game with the sound turned off.
At least this time we cannot say, as in Korea/Japan four years ago, that the refs were against us. As far as I could see, the ref distributed his mistakes impartially. It is just sad that the most disastrous one should come at the last minute.
Better luck next time, Australia. And congratulations on a Cup well fought.

Date: 2006-06-27 02:51 am (UTC)You guys did deserve to win. You are the better team - Australia just don't have the experience at that sort of level. They did us proud in doing as well as they did.
But it was an awful way to go out. And yes, I agree that there were some bad reffing decisions that went both ways - a notable one being that guy who got a red card. I guess Italy got their revenge with the unfair penalty...
It's a crap way to end it for both sides - if Italy had scored one good, clean goal, I think all of us here would have been disappointed, but also said "fair enough". This doesn't seem like it's a satisfying victory for the Italians - and it's an awful defeat for us.
