An urgent warning to all my UK friends

Everyone who reads this who lives in the UK pay attention. The Film On Four TV channel is having a season of the complete movies of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli: probably the greatest movie maker alive, certainly the greatest animator of all time. If you miss these without a good reason, you can begin kicking yourselves right now.

Tonight they had Princess Mononoke, which I had never seen before. Praising it is redundant, but it gripped me from the start and did not let me go till the end. Tanto nomini nullum par elogium.

It's one of my absolute favorite movies, though it grew on me slowly. But now... I really find it profound. I wish to model myself on Ashitaka. He's a true, true hero.

I really think Miyazaki has a great, great heart. His love for people, for the world, and his sense of its sadness and its beauty. I just stand in awe. So many small moments in so many of his films show such a truly great heart.
