I just had this same unpleasant experience; not, of course, for the first time, but - and this is what is horrible - at the hands of a supposed friend. I took a screencap, just in case. privatemaladict seems to think that jokes about Catholics being prevented from breeding or hate talk about the Church amounts to protected speech, and that I should not have pointed out that such talk is bigoted and intolerant. Then she locked the post against me: the usual reaction of people who have no arguments.

This has been a long friendship as Internet friendships go, and I wish it did not have to end like this. But I will take that kind of shit from nobody. I do not accept it about Jews, I do not accept about blacks or Chinese, I do not even accept about Muslims (although I do not like Islam), AND I DO NOT SEE WHY ON EARTH I SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO TOLERATE IT WHEN IT IS AIMED AT ME.

Are you serious? Do you imagine for a minute that an insult aimed at me as member of a group does not affect me as a person? Would you call a black man "nigger"?

I'm not going to argue. Not because I can't, but because I'm tired of it. You're not very good at seeing things from other people's perspective, and I've dealt with that - but I'm tired of arguing with somebody who cannot refrain from personal jabs and insults every time someone disagrees with him. I'm not just talking about this instance. There have been times in the past where you've been rude to me personally, and I've overlooked it and kept pressing my point. There have been times when you've condescending, and I've ignored it and done my best to respond like an adult.

But I'm tired of it. I've had enough blows in recent months without trying to argue with you, and without putting up with your incredible lack of respect. I have always been polite and respectful to you, even when I've disagreed with you. You have not shown me the same courtesy.

I'm sorry, but I am going to take you off my friends list. This is not because of this latest blow-up in my LJ, but a long history of casual rudeness. I don't need this in my life right now.

And I repeat: you try telling a racist joke in front of a black person and then telling them they should not take it personally. That is the point that, from beginning to end, you simply refuse to answer. If you are having a bad period, that is too bad, but by what bizarre leap of logic this justifies your friends insulting me and my Church, I simply cannot see.

I would also point out that you claim to be able to argue the point. That is curious, seeing as how from beginning to end you have escaped into personalities and into arrogant statements that the behaviour of your friends (which showed that as far as you were concerned I was, from the beginning, not one) was not as bad as it obviously was. You refused to answer from beginning to end; the emotional blackmail game (I am feeling so bad, I had such an awful time, you are such a horrible person) is just the latest and most demeaning of your refusals to deal with your friend's disgusting behaviour. The truth is that if this lasted a million years, you would never come up with an argument, only with evasions and dodges; because you have no argument.

Nor do I appreciate this extrmely belated discovery of my supposed "rudeness" (with not a single example to support it) which only came up when it was a matter of defending the bigotry of your damned friends. If really had an issue with my behaviour at any time, you should have brought it up then and not when I was protesting about the behaviour of others. I always tried to be supportive and helpful, barring that I would not say white was black only to please you. This all seems just an excuse to get on a contemptible ideological train.

As an Australian, as far as I know, our common law protects free speech, but we have a lot of statutes in all the states and territories banning hate speech. Practically, this can create issues.

I was not using the expression in its legal sense. The protection in question was that afforded by the blog owner to her despicable friends in their detestable behaviour, which I was not supposed to criticize. IN other words, I am speaking of moral cowardice and brutal double standards.

The simple rule of 'joke about your own' is good. The best Irish jokes are told by the Irish, the best Jewish jokes told by Jews; if a member of the group isn't prepared to say it - then it probably isn't funny.
