Once again, I agree with nearly every word Matt Towery says

And even the hate-ridden, spiteful, stupid reactions from True Believer conservatives at the bottom only strengthen his argument: http://townhall.com/columnists/MattTowery/2008/11/07/post-mortem_on_john_mccains_candidacy?page=full

Yeah, I did wonder why the GOP establishment 'allowed' McCain to be the party nominee when for so many years he was considered by not a small group as a party traitor for his a) willingness to cross the aisle, b) his 'popularity' with the press, and c) open, vocal criticism of Bush on several issues not too long ago. Weeks ago I found myself under the impression that maybe McCain wasn't supposed to win, that he was chosen as a nominee, a party elder like Bob Dole, that would give the token fight and then lose. Call me cynical.

That is Towery's view. I think McCain mucked things up for them by fighting to win in a most effective manner. The establishment candidate was Romney, with Giuliani as a fallback guy, but the Republican base informed both of them that they were not acceptable. So the country-club set set out to demolish McCain. I think they were even more scared of Palin than the opposition were: the notion of not one but two reformers on a winning presidential ticket, just as the congress party faced demolition, was too much to be borne. Well, they have had their way, and now I expect that Sarah Palin will meet with serious problems at home. I can see the Democratic leadership cooperating with the country-club Republicans to destroy any chance of a future Palin presidential run.

So can I.
