An excellent mystery featuring a truly fascinating mystery student - NOTHING like a Mary Sue - and an amazingly well-characterized Severus Snape. The author manages to give him remarkable power and a real protagonist's presence without in the least lessening his bastard attitude and moral ambiguity. Read it, you won't be sorry.

Since I hate to see a rec without a link (even if it isn't that hard to work out), interested Livejournalers may find the fic serialized here. Livejournal is not ordinarily a convenient format for reading chaptered fics, but in this particular case the theme's "Prev/Next Entry" links are useful for moving from chapter to chapter of the fic since the account is entirely devoted to it.

Damn! Sorry. The only explanation I have for that failure is that I wrote this post in a great hurry as I was about to go out. I had actually made a "copy" of the address and I was sure I had written it in. Anyway, yours is better, since I would have given the address of the FA archive, where faraday_writes has only published six chapters. I am catching up now and enjoying it enormously.

Ah, thanks for the rec! I hope you continue to enjoy the story. I only came across Fiction Alley fairly recently, hence there only being a few chapters posted there at the moment.
