I was listening to various versions of Franz Lehar's great Vilja oh Vilja song, which is clearly about the same kind of creatures as JKR's Veelas.

It occurred to me that I had never seen any fanfic that really dealt with the Veelas as JKR described them during the World Cup scenes in GoF - in particular, the hidden yet profound link between their terrible and irresistible beauty and their other form as cruel sharp-taloned birds of prey. I do not quite feel that a story on this theme is in my chords (the closest I got was in The Dark Star, but the conclusion was still too human), but I would love to read one. Of course, I would not want a cliched "cruel selfish beauty" plot, but something more complex and - perhaps - threatening must be possible. Does any one of my HP-reading friends feel up to trying their hand at a fanfic? Bonus points if you include Lehar's song.

Can't say I'm up to that story currently, but I definitely second the request. Something that explores believable motives on both sides, for the Veela and her 'prey', would be particularly interesting.

Now I have to go beat around the bushes of the Internet, because I am positive this same creature exists in Japanese mythology, but all I have to go on is one obscure reference in an anime side-story. No doubt she's all over the place, but this one is bugging me.

Ah, that's Louise Brooks. One of these days, I'd like to actually see one of her films.

Japanese fairy tales have Crane, Swan, and Fox women in somewhat similar roles. In Native American mythology, there is the Deer Woman. The animal wife and the siren are universal motifs, and Veela sort of combine the two.

Hmm, I've had one idea I could spend a 350-word driblet on, but it may be a little too dark and violent.

Go on. I sort of have an idea - at least, a concept of how I might make sense of her - but I guess it is likeliest to just join the registry of dead ideas.

Not sure it's quite what you had envisioned, but this is what I came up with. There wasn't ultimately a place to work in the song, but that may have been for the best.
