Did not at least one Roman hero use a navigable body of water for an heroic cleaning? Mind, it was a stable, not an apartment, but the principle remains. Running it off the mountains would get the proper "whoosh" going. ;)
Herakles was Greek, actually, and my Greek friends would not be pleased were I to appropriate him for my country. And it is not wise to evoke the Stables of Augias: after he had done the required cleaning, Herakles killed Augias by way of thanks.
