What do I do with half a dozen limes? It's not an Italian fruit, I never had it before, and I have no idea whether it can even be eaten as it is.

No, they are not the same thing at all. They look similar but smell very different. Cilantro is the leaves of the coridander plant (coriandolo), also sometimes known as "Chinese Parsley"

I just went and got my Ritcher's herb guide. Leaf Parsley (Prezzemolo) is Petroselinum cripum neopolitanum. Cilantro is Coriandrum sativum.

That actually explains a lot. At any rate, coriander - named - is easily found in Indian shops in London.
