If you haven't read [personal profile] inverarity's Alexandra Quick novels, you are missing a GREAT GREAT GREAT work of art. The third out of seven is almost published through, with a climax so shattering and profound as to put Deathly Hallows in the shade. If you don't read them, especially this third story (and my God, if this is what we have at number three, what will the next four ones be like?), you will be doing yourselves a major injustice, I swear it. As for me, I haven't felt such an urge to read and go on reading since JKR's originals, and before that, since Alan Moore at his best, since the early days of Chris Claremont, since Jack Kirby lived and ruled. This is history being made. Go and follow the next big thing.

What it has as good or even better than the original:
• characterization, especially adolescent interaction
• unbiased, colorful, engaging portrayal of different subcultures
• tight, clever, complicated plotting
• thought-out and consistent magic logic

What I found missing:
• Rowling's madcap fertility of imagination
• characters that I actually like

Summary w/really vague spoilers:

The main character's relentlessly amoral inner life made her headspace a less than pleasant place to spend so much time in. I kept finding myself missing Harry's heart of gold. The character I enjoyed most is now offscreen perhaps permanently. I really hope Alexandra's character is starts developIng into something better soon. That being said, I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. I'll certainly be reading future installments.

In fact, I found that AQ was too much like HP, especially in that the motivation of both to be heroes is a "saving people thing" which leads them to do incredibly dangerous things. Alexandra bargains away her life to save the life and soul of a girl she does not even like and who has tried to kill her. As for "relentlessly amoral inner life" - frankly, I don't even understand what you are talking about.
