http://www.newsrealblog.com/2010/07/05/wonder-woman-the-non-american-how-soon-will-she-be-wearing-a-burqa/

I take that all-American values include prick-teasing, lesbianism, BDSM, and bigamy? (Moulton, the creator of Wonder Woman, convinced two women to live with him permanently. He was a psychologist, God forgive him. At any rate, CG Jung had done the same thing earlier - selfish practitioners of psychology will sooner or later find people they can fit to their designs.) Wonder Woman as a character stinks on ice and always has, and as for suggesting that this skintight fuck-me outfit is the next step to a burqa, these people need glasses, that's all.

I tried reading those comments, but then my brain turned wrongside out. Partly becasue--Wonder Woman was an Amazon or something, right? And last I checked, the Amazon runs through like, Brazil. And possibly Ecuador. And parts of Peru.

Um. This is one of those things where logic will only get me hurt, isn't it. I'll leave it alone.

But pssst, hey DC. The 80's called, and they want their Members Only jacket back.

Actually, the Amazons of Greek mythology have been alternately placed in eastern Europe, Asia Minor or northern Africa. Wonder Woman is from the fictional island of Themyscira, which is a vaguely Hellenistic society. But her original costume was comprised almost entirely of American iconography, and her first appearance was fighting Nazis. Regardless of whether or not she technically is American, or whether or not her creator actually espoused what anyone would want to call American values, the character has been marketed as an All-American girl. And apparently still is, which is really what makes the article ridiculous.

Oh jeepers, of course. I completely spaced on the Greek mythology. *thoroughly embarrassed*
(eta: And managed to confuse Amazon with Amazonian. Yikes, sorry.)

Hm, but thank you for the canonical correction! As a kid of the 70s, I sort of imprinted on Lynda Carter, taking Wonder Woman as part of this American TV heroine pantheon including Charlie's Angels and The Bionic Woman, and was never cognizant of much beyond that.

Interesting, I appreciate the backstory now.

Totally understandable, and you're welcome. :)

Not always, bub. The first WW comic I read in English was a Giant-Size from about 1976, where the sexual and BD overtones were so obvious that I felt angry and cheated. I had intended, you see, to buy a superhero comic, not a porn (if I wanted any, there were plenty in Italian and cheaper, and one did not have to cross the city to go to the few newsstands that had American comics). I remember that one of the artists was Steve Ditko, whom I was later to find had quite a record in that area. I later found out that DC was going overboard with all sorts of sexual overtones at the time - think of the Legion's bikini "uniforms" - but WW certainly afforded them more chance for it than most.

WOW! I didn't think there could be anything stupider than comparing changing her outfit to the insidious promotion of the New World Order, but I think you found something. *eye roll*

Personally I think the new design is tacky and makes her look like a modern mall rat/immature teenager, so I oppose it on those grounds, though the idea of a redesign I'm fine. Just wish they'd done a better job. Marvel did IMHO a swell job with Steve, and I think that would have been harder.

Speaking of, I'm highly amused that her redesign and the loss of overt Americanism in her costume is casuing more of a stir than Steve's redesign. I guess cause he's still in red, white and blue with some stars, but still it's kinda funny. If I were gonna make lunatic comparisons to comic character pushing the NWO or some such I'd have gone for Steve going from Captain America to .... world wide police cheif or whatever he is now.

WW is what my contemporaries dressed like while our friends were Batman and Spiderman. Lipstick made the lack of a cool mask bearable. The new look is bearable, if dated as much as the 'old'look.
